Dal pita

Ingredients

  • 1 Handful Fresh Coriander, Finely chopped
  • 1/2 Cup Fresh Mints, finely chopped
  • 1 litre of Water
  • 1/2 Cup Brown lentils
  • salt to taste
  • Oil 
  • 1 Medium Onion, finely sliced
  • 1 Tsp Garlic and ginger paste
  • 1 Tsp Garam Masala
  • 1/2 Cup fried Onion
  • 1 Tsp Turmeric 
  •  
  • For the Dough(dumplings)
  • 1 Cup Plain flour
  • Salt to taste 
  • 1 tsp oil
  • 1/3 cup (85ml) water

Method

  • On medium heat place a deep pot filled with water, lentils and salt and bring to boil for 15 minutes or until soft.
  • In skillet heat, some oil over medium-low heat then fries up the sliced onion and ginger and garlic paste until soft and lightly golden. Add the Garam masala and turmeric and allow to cook the spices with the onion for 3-5 minutes then off the heat.
  • After 15 minutes test the lentils if cooked(soft enough) then mix well the spices mixture into the lentils broth allow to boil for 10 mins on low heat.
  • In a large mixing bowl add the plain flour, salt, oil and add water gradually until a soft dough is obtained. Cover with a cloth and leave to rest for a few minutes.
  • When ready to roll, On floured surface roll into a large rectangle then cut into little squares.
  • When the lentils are cooked add the dough pieces to the cooked into the broth, stir From time to time they don’t stick together. Leave to cook 10-15 minutes until the dough is cooked.
  • Stir in the chopped coriander, mints, fried onion sprinkle with the garam masala.
  • Serve the Dhal Pita warm with coconut chutney(satini coco) or With rougaille.
