Mauritian Gato Pima falafel/ split peas bites recipe

Ingredients

Gato pima is a traditional everyday dish in Mauritius. Often had at breakfast and sometimes as a snack or for tea. It’s a bit like a split peas pakora, here’s a very simple recipe on how to make Mauritian gato pima! Enjoy!

Ingredients for Mauritian Gato Pima falafel/ split peas bites recipe:

  • 850g split peas
  • Spring greens
  • Chilli and salt (to your taste)
  • 1 tsp Bicarbonate of soda
  • 2tbp cumin seeds Oil ( to deep fry)
  • 1 slice of bread 

Method

Preparation of Mauritian Gato Pima falafel/ split peas bites recipe:

  1. Wash and soak your split peas over night.
  2. Grind your split peas
  3. Combine your spring greens to the grinded split peas
  4. Soak your bread, squeeze the water out and add to the mixture
  5. Shape your gato pima whilst your oil is heating up
  6. Fry and serve with bread and butter or however you enjoy your gato pima!
